Murley / Occhipinti Duo Saxophonist Mike Murley and guitarist David Occhipinti began playing in and around Toronto as a duo in 1999. The intimate musical rapport that they developed during this period led to their eventual recording of the “Duologue” CD in November of 2002. This critically acclaimed recording was nominated for a Juno Award, a national jazz award and a Canadian Music "Indie" award in 2004. Their second “Duologue, Vol 2” was released in 2005, garnering similar acclaim. Since the release of these recordings the duo has frequently performed concerts across Canada. His critically-acclaimed work as a leader and a sideman has placed him at the forefront of Canada's jazz scene for more than a decade. Since winning the Juno Award in 1991 for his "Two Sides" album, Murley has appeared on eight other Juno award-winning recordings. Murley has released six critically acclaimed recordings as a leader. His "Extra Time" CD was voted album of the year at the 2005 National Jazz Awards. His trio CD, "Live at the Senator" won the 2002 Juno Award in the best mainstream jazz album category. Murley was a four-time recipient of the Jazz Report Award for tenor saxophonist of the year during the 1990s and more recently received the National Jazz Award for saxophonist of the year in 2002, 2004, and 2005. David Occhipinti - guitar Guitarist/composer David Occhipinti has three CD's featuring his own compositions: David Occhipinti (1997) and Syzygy (1999) and Intersection (2003). His latest CD was described by Geoff Chapman of the Toronto Star as: "definitely music for today, streamlined yet atmospheric...a listener hears the rare but gratifying combination of lyricism and cutting edge music." David studied in New York with the legendary guitarist Jim Hall during the mid 1990's. He has toured in Canada, the US, Europe and Japan as a sideman and teaches guitar at Humber College and at the University of Toronto. In 2006 David composed a string quartet which was performed by the Madawaska String Quartet . His fourth CD as a leader, exclusively featuring his compositions, will be released in 2007.
