Mike Murley Trio

Formed in 1998, Murley’s original trio featured Ed Bickert (guitar) and Steve Wallace (bass). In 2002, this group recorded Live at the Senator, winning that year’s Juno Award for best mainstream jazz album. Murley’s current trio, which now features Reg Schwager (guitar) in addition to Steve Wallace (bass), continues this tradition of intimate, lyrical explorations of jazz standards and Murley originals.

In a warm, relaxed and inviting style, Murley’s trio seeks to explore and reinvent the standard jazz repertoire – the great challenge of all jazz players, to take tunes which have been played innumerable times and to play them honestly, freshly, and in one’s own voice.

One of the most popular formats in the jazz idiom, the trio lays bare this process, requiring a particular synergy between its players. Each musician has an equal voice, and the setting requires that the players listen to one another intently, adapting to changing musical roles as the tune, and as the night progresses. Murley, Wallace and Schwager have been playing together in a variety of situations for years, and the confidence and warmth they share permeates every bar.

Often, Guido Basso (trumpet/flugelhorn) joins Murley’s acoustic trio as a special guest. His incomparable musicality is always welcome, and the addition of his voice lends the group a unique and truly special dynamic.
