Murley Quintet

Comprised of five of Canada’s most exciting jazz musicians, Mike Murley's Quintet has firmly established itself in the contemporary mainstream tradition of jazz.

Their 1997 release Conversation Piece received both critical and popular acclaim (1997 Jazz Report Award), and their recent 2004 release Extra Time has been called a “compelling demonstration…of [the]group [‘s]…collective consciousness.” Having played with one another in both this Quintet and a variety of other settings over the years, the interplay between the group’s members is both remarkable and refreshing.

Murley’s Quintet has toured the country extensively, and some of their higher profile concerts include the National Library of Canada in Ottawa, the Glen Gould Theatre in Toronto, and the Festival International de Jazz de Montreal.

Murley's compositions form the bulk of the band's repertoire, though live performances are sure to include work from some of the tradition's greatest composers (Thelonious Monk, Wayne Shorter) and material from the standard repertoire.

In addition to their impressive small group credits, all four of Murley's sidemen have toured and recorded with Canada's Grammy Award winning big band, Rob McConnell and the Boss Brass.
